Hi all

Sunday 28th March 2010. I have just started to update this section. Over the next week I will be adding lots of updates.

The question of which are the correct lights to have on your Series 2 has been asked right from the beginning of production.  The longer Series 2's were produced, the more lights land Rover used and the more confusing it became.  It got that bad that in May 1966 Land Rover produced a Service Newsletter to explain to dealers what was what.  The Service Newsletter is a very useful document to help identify lights that are fitted to your vehicle and does go some where to explaining what should be on your vehicle.  There is no definitive answer to that question as Land Rover fitted what they had in stock, but the Parts books should help you to narrow down what could have been fitted.

Later in production things got even more confusing, because up to three manufacturers were producing very similar lights.  For example, The standard Lucas Lamp that continued through Series Three production and onto the Defender, was first used on Series 2's from suffix 'B' vehicles onwards and very similar light lenses have been produced by Lucas, by L.E. Perei and by Wipac.

Please also look at the photos below of lights on members vehicles.  These should help you to identify your lights. The original and alternative manufacturers will be listed on the pictures.  Please remember that the combinations of lights on these vehicles may not be correct as they may have been changed.

If you have any further information or photos of lights, please post the information below.

Sparto rear lamps on my 1967 Suffix D Carawagon.
Similar to the Perei units by the looks of it, but not the same. I think this one on the O/S has a clear section in the bottom to light the numberplate up.

Hi Paul

Cheers for the photos.  Any chance of you confirming the part numbers of these lamps.

All my series 2's (58,59,59,61) have had sparto's originally.
rear indicator lenses/lights are totally out of stock everywhere

Not out of stock in my spares shed! ;) Probably got two if not three vehicle sets of the lenses and chrome rings. Don't ask me to dig any out in a hurry though, they're well buried under other stuff. I actually prefer the domed glass Lucas lights myself, although if I was going for a rivet-counter resto I'd probably fit the Spartos. My '60 had Lucas ancient & modern fitted when I got it. The Spartos came of a '61 109" 2a - a very very low numbered one, and a 58/59 vintage 88" basket case with no identity where one vehicle was made out of two - with modern lights....

The extent of the pool of knowledge on this forum is pehenominal.

However, its things like this that make my wife worry about me.

You are to the series II club what Aether was to the Greeks.

Do you know where to get the numbers for the RAF lights? I imagine they're the same as the MOD lights with the wings on.

Cheers tiphat
